This is the last remaining Fire Station of the 6 built in 1942 by the
Military. The original Camp Adair included a 3600 bed Hospital that is now the
Santiam Christian School, Prince of Peace Church, the Laborers Training School and the
Block House today. Our restaurant and store reside in yet another WWII era building, in which most
of the original features were retained. The roll up doors can be seen downstairs in the Market.
The original red brick chimney for the boiler extends from the lower floor up to tower over the
roof. The siding on the building is also intact, and painted in the original colors.
Previous owners, since the war had hidden a warm and inviting old growth Douglas fir wood floor under layers of linoleum and carpet in our dining room. This was found and lovingly restored. There is still a large patch of burned area in the Cafe from a fire in December of 2006 that damaged the former AV Pub and Grill. This almost doomed the building. Fortunately due to a group of passionate people and the local Adair Rural Fire and Rescue Volunteers,who believe history is important, that too was restored and the building was preserved. We then put in the finishing touches and transformed the four walls into a convenience store and Café.
We also like to acknowledge and support our Areas unique history, and the brave men and women
who kept it alive, so we proudly display an assortment of WWII memorabilia in the restaurant.
Look on the wall up near the cafe cash register to see a picture of the Fire Crew back then
and now. A Camp Adair memorial garden is located on the left side of the road at the E.E. Wilson
Wild Life Refuge (just a mile north of us), where Four divisions trained here during WWII.
They were the Powder River (91st), the Trail Blazers (70th), the Deadeye (96th) and the
Timber Wolves (104th). Our wall of Honor is graced with some of their pictures.
Indeed, all around you are mementos and collections of things from WWII and Camp Adair.
In fact Someone once told me that his experience was just like eating in the comfort of someone's
home. We hope you feel the same.
You can start, or stop, or maybe just take a break during your day exploring any of the many outdoor recreational opportunities that surround us; for we are centrally located between several of them (and the Store also carries hiking, fishing and even frisbee Disc Golf supplies too). So come in a and sit a spell, as you look out the many windows at the trail head into the alluring McDonald Dunn forest to the West with miles of deep forest hiking trails, and lush, moss covered trees on all sides, with an occasional appearance of Deer, Elk, Squirrels, Wild Turkey's and sometimes even Porcupines.
Or head off to the South, just across the street, to the Fish and Wildlife pond to walk around or fish at a leisurely pace -- Where Beaver and Osprey are often seen especially just before dark.
To the East on Vandenburg is the Model Train Station. Further East on Arnold is
one of the best and most challenging Frisbee Disc Golf courses located in Adair Park,
and the Benton County Parks Clubhouse on Ebony Lane. Just a little bit further down
that road is the Brian Unwin Field (Benton County Parks Aerodrome) where folks fly
model airplanes and helicopters. To the North on 99w you turn on Camp Adair Road to
find E.E. Wilson Game management area. Fishing, observing wildlife areas and hunting
are a few things you can do there.
